Turning Old to Gold


The Customer :

The customer is over a 100 year old Engineering company involved in production of high quality Brass assemblies for the agricultural & Industrial applications. Over the years they have acquired a few other companies with a similar background & thus enhanced their offerings.

The Challenge:

  • The process of acquisitions of many companies & non updations of engineering drawings over many years coupled with unrecorded changes in their in-house production facility has left the company facing a huge challenge on outsourcing of parts manufacturing.
  • They also felt the products need to undergo value engineering process to make their products more cost effective in a difficult market to stay competitive. Solid modeling, stress analysis , usage of modern materials had to be done.
  • The acquisition of many brands also required communizing the design & putting together the best from each design.
  • The mountain of paper drawings & sketches needed to be captured in an electronic form for analysis & maintenance.
  • The drawings also needed to be as per the latest ASTM GD&T recommendations

The Solution:

The head of Engineering from the customer came down to APA Engineering & trained the engineers on the expectations & requirements of their company. This intensive 2 week training prepared the engineers to embark on this difficult project. The exclusive team put together quickly acted as an extension of the engineering division of the customer. A system was evolved for capturing all the inputs given by the customer & ensuring all the outputs were checked on these inputs. The team was divided into a Drafting team & a validation team to ensure no bias. Performance was monitored on a daily basis & training imparted wherever some gaps were noticed.

Scheduled & unscheduled telecons, chats, gotomeeting’s, Gantt charts & discussions between the engineers from both companies ensured that whole project is moving as planned towards completion in September 2009.
